Why do Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a versatile, evidence-informed complementary approach. Research supports its use across a wide range of physical and psychological goals.
๐ฟ Gut & Digestive Wellbeing
Gut-directed hypnotherapy is one of the most well-researched applications of clinical hypnosis. It is used to support people experiencing:
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
Functional bloating and abdominal discomfort
Stress-related digestive symptoms
Nausea
๐ง Stress, Anxiety & Emotional Wellbeing
Everyday stress and overwhelm
Anticipatory anxiety (e.g. before medical procedures, presentations, social situations)
Low mood and emotional fatigue
Building confidence and self-esteem
๐ฝ๏ธ Relationship with Food, Eating Habits & Weight
Emotional and stress eating
Unplanned snacking and impulsive food choices
Building a more positive, relaxed relationship with food and your body
Supporting long-term healthy eating habits
๐ด Sleep
๐ช Habits & Behaviour Change
Difficulty winding down or switching off at night
Racing thoughts at bedtime
Disrupted sleep related to stress or anxiety
Many habits โ from how we eat, to how we respond to stress โ are automatic and unconscious. Hypnotherapy can support people looking to:
๐ฉบ Pain & Medical Procedure Support
Shift deeply ingrained patterns of behaviour
Strengthen motivation and self-efficacy
Build new, more helpful responses to triggers
Support smoking reduction (as a complementary approach)
Research shows some of the most robust evidence for hypnosis in:
Chronic pain management
Reducing anxiety and pain during medical or dental procedures
Menopausal symptoms including hot flushes
Cancer-related pain, fatigue, and emotional distress
Important: Hypnotherapy is a complementary approach and is not a substitute for medical, psychological, or dietetic care. Results vary between individuals. If you have a diagnosed medical or mental health condition, please continue working with your healthcare team alongside any complementary support.
What is a Hypnotherapy session like?
Most people are surprised by how ordinary โ and relaxing โ a hypnotherapy session feels.
Your first session typically begins with a conversation. Eli will ask about what brings you in, your goals, and any relevant background. This helps tailor the session to you. There is no “one size fits all” approach.
The hypnotic state is not sleep, and you are not unconscious. It is a naturally occurring state of focused, relaxed attention โ similar to being absorbed in a good book or that drifting feeling just before sleep. You remain aware, in control, and able to speak at any time.
During the session, Eli will guide you into this relaxed state using a gentle, verbal induction โ typically involving slow breathing, progressive relaxation, or imagery. Once you are settled, she will use carefully chosen language and suggestions tailored to your goals.
After the session, most people feel calm and refreshed. You may be given a self-hypnosis audio or simple practice to do at home between sessions, which research suggests can improve outcomes.
A typical course of hypnotherapy involves 2 โ8 sessions, though this varies depending on the focus area. Sessions usually run 50โ90 minutes.
A note on what to expect: Hypnotherapy works best when approached with openness and realistic expectations. It is a collaborative process โ your therapist guides, but you do the work. Results vary between individuals.
